History/Background

 

HASSAN has a rich Histoy of its own. Epigraphic evidences reveal that HASSAN was known as “SIMASANPURA” in the past. In ancient texts, HASSAN WAS RULED BY HOYSALAS, VIJAYANAGAR KINGS, MYSURU ODAYAS and  BRITISH  PERIOD.

Importance

The Museum is devoted to the regional history covering the Cultural, Sociological and Historical aspects of HASSAN District.  It is serving the most useful purpose of educating the people.

Collections

Pre-historic to Early historic:

The Archeological Objects like Neolithic tools, are displayed in the gallery.

 

Coins:

Museum has total 104 coins collection. VIJAYANAGAR, MYSURU ODAYAS , BRITISH(Nickel 4, Silver 15, Copper 85)These coins show the currency system in India and show how artistically they are manufactured.

 

Paintings:

The Paintings belongings to artists from Hassan district area are displayed in the contemporary Paintings Gallery. The paintings like oil, Water,  Pencil sketch, Crayon, Sketch pen, Collography,  Mixed media,  Etching and Poster water colour

Sculptures:   The Museum has a rare collection of Sculptures collected from various part of Hassan District, have been displayed here belonging to the period of the 10th to 17th CE. The image of Sala and Laion is represented by Hoysala period. The sculptures of Veerabhadra, Uma-Maheswara, Mahishasuramardini, Kubera, Garuda, Surya, Vishnu,  Lakhmi-Narayana, Shiva, Bhairava, etc. all belongs to Hoysala to Vijayanagara period.  

Jainism is represented by sculptures of Tirthankaras like Adinatha, Parswanatha and Mahaveera.    

The Worship of Goddess (Adishakthi) in around Hassan is clearly known from the numerous devi sculptures like, Mahishasuramardhini and which have been collected in this area   and displayed in the gallery. Inscriptions: 

Number of Inscriptions Displayed in the museum. These are Kannada Inscriptions belonging to the period 12 to 16 Century A.D.Halmidi Inscriptions Replicas displayed in the gallery.
